Clean Water Initiative — Enugu
Installed solar-powered borehole systems in three rural communities, providing clean drinking water to approximately 5,000 people.
In many of Enugu State's rural communities, the daily search for clean water consumes hours of time — time that could otherwise be spent in school, at work, or with family. Waterborne illness remains a leading cause of preventable death among children under five in these areas.
Working with local engineers and community leaders, IRM funded and oversaw the installation of three solar-powered borehole systems in the Udi Local Government Area. Each system is designed to deliver clean water to a community of roughly 1,500 residents and is built to operate with minimal maintenance for fifteen or more years. The solar component eliminates dependence on unreliable grid power, making each installation genuinely self-sustaining.
Community water committees were established at each site and trained in basic system maintenance and water quality testing. This handover model ensures long-term ownership and sustainability — a cornerstone of IRM's approach to relief work. A follow-up monitoring visit is scheduled for early 2026.
