Disaster Relief — Flood Response
Delivered emergency supplies including food, clean water, blankets, and medical aid to communities affected by severe flooding.
In late May 2025, unusually intense rainfall caused catastrophic flooding across parts of Greater Accra. Low-lying residential areas were inundated within hours. Thousands of families lost homes, food stores, and livelihoods. Access roads were cut off and public services were severely strained.
IRM mobilized within 48 hours of the initial reports. Working with a pre-positioned logistics partner, the team sourced and delivered 1,200 emergency relief packs — each containing a five-day food supply, 20 litres of clean water, emergency blankets, and a basic first-aid kit. A field medical unit ran triage from a community school for three days, treating injuries and distributing oral rehydration salts to prevent dehydration-related illness.
Disaster relief is among the most urgent expressions of IRM's mandate. The organization maintains a rapid response fund precisely for moments like this — allowing deployment before bureaucratic processes can slow the work. IRM continues to monitor the affected communities and has contributed to a longer-term rebuilding plan being coordinated by local government.
